Piddington Flock of Pedigree Shropshire Sheep

Hansnett Farm is home to the Piddington flock of Pedigree Shropshire Sheep. Established in 1982 with foundation ewes from the late Alec Harding’s Lodge flock (Northamptonshire) and Ben Dew of Stretton Sugwas (Herefordshire), the flock is now managed by Grandmother and Granddaughter duo, Sue & Ellie.

Shropshire Sheep are the oldest registered breed of pedigree sheep in the UK, but far from being old fashioned and outdated, their strengths make them ideal for modern sustainable farming.

They are a fantastic tri-purpose breed – they are bred for their meat, wool and ‘tree-friendly’ nature. The breed is used widely to control grass and herbage in conifer plantations, orchards and other deciduous trees.

Shropshire sheep help maximise productivity by allowing the harvest of ‘two crops from one acre’, while reducing the environmental impact by minimising the use of pesticides and herbicides.

The Piddington flock has enjoyed great success in the showring including:

Supreme Champion Sheep – Staffordshire Show 1990

Supreme Champion Signet Recorded Ram Lamb – The Royal Show 1996

Overall Champion Shropshire – Shropshire Sheep 125th Anniversary Show 2007

Supreme Champion Sheep – Shropshire County Show 2010

Interbreed Reserve Terminal Sire – Royal Three Counties Show 2012

Champion Sheep – SSBA Centenary Show and Sale 2017

The Piddington flock has exported sheep to France, Austria, Denmark, Germany and Eire as well as semen to Canada, USA, Sweden and Norway.
